The death of 27-year old actor Anton Yelchin that occurred on June 19 has officially been ruled as an accident by the county coroner’s office of Los Angeles. This confirmed a preliminary statement that had been issued by the Los Angeles police department when the accident occurred.
Yelchin, who rose to fame after his role in Star Trek films, was found dead pinned under his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is believed that the vehicle had been left in neutral gear and that it rolled down a short, steep driveway and crushed into the actor resulting in his death. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Jeep’s parent company, and the Los Angeles police department are collaborating in an investigation to determine whether the vehicle’s automatic shifter was the cause of the accident.
The suspicion comes from the fact that Yelchin’s Jeep Grand Cherokee was confirmed to have been part of a recall done in April 2016. This was an investigation done by the National Traffic Safety Administration (NTSA) that established that the vehicle’s shifter had a design they described as unintuitive. NTSA also said that this design did not give drivers tactile feedback which made it necessary for them to keep looking at the shifter display to check its position every time they shifted gear.
Apart from the Yelchin case, the shifter design has been linked to more than 100 crashes and 41 reports of injuries by drivers who exited their vehicles with the belief that they had left it in park. By law, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is liable and culpable for injuries and damages suffered because of a defect in their shifter.
